A yacht for you
It is hard to give a recipe for a universal vessel... At the beginning one has to answer the question of where she will be sailing. Each water reservoir has its own specification. A yacht for long voyages on the lakes has to follow different guidelines than one for weekend breaks. There are also small offshore yachts.
Tourist yachts
An inshore cabin tourist yacht has to have high stability, be unsinkable, have a small draught, flying centerboard and rudder; should be fitted with a light, easy to remove mast, and uncomplicated rigging. The height on the cabin should be at least 1.2 m, with comfortable berths with sitting height, a table, and if the cubature of the hull permits a small galley. The weight and dimensions of such vessel allow it to be hauled by an average size car on a single-axle trailor.
A yacht for weekend breaks should follow similar guidelines as an inshore yacht, however does not necessarily require a cabin. However, waterproof compartments for storing the baggage are suggested, but not crucial. Vessels of this type used to make up the most of the inshore tourist fleet. Considering its dimensions and the weight, 6-8 people should be able to launch it.
Beach yachts
Catamarans and beach yachts are in a separate group. Sailing on them during strong winds releases an amount of adrenaline, which can only be compared to a bungee jump. They are light, easy to transport, rig and launch; and do not take up a lot of space after assembly. They can be stored in a garage hanging from the ceiling.
Small offshore yachts
A small yacht for long voyages should first of all be strong and reliable… A relatively high draught, moderate initial stability and high final stability, also ability to keep to course; small overhangs of the hull; simple, but strong rigging, low placed middle of rigging, surface of sails not too much extended; a small cockpit with outflows…
Crew
Next issue to be taken into consideration is who we are going to sail with. A yacht for an experienced crew, eager to treat every yacht as an invitation to racing, has to be designed in a different way from a “Happy Sailing” yacht – for those who treat sailing in another way – sailing in no hurry, what does not mean little. One more important thing – the number of crew. It is better to plan one additional foldaway berth than to fit the hull, as if three generations would be sailing together – this rarely happens.
Technology
What is left is the choice of building technology. You can build from plywood, glue the hulls from planks or use the one-off technology (epoxy-glass laminate, foam). This choice has to depend on our manual abilities. It is not true though, that if we have never built a boat before, we cannot do it ourselves. The important is how well we can handle a wood and metal saw, electric saw, plane and file, if we can polish, fill and paint using brush and roller…
If we have an idea about all of this, and think during our work, than we will quickly become adept in boat building and it will be a source of great fun. Patience is very important. You cannot build a yacht in one month – the more time we dedicate to the work, the more satisfying the result will be. On the other hand, if the work continues for longer than 2 years, then we will loose the zeal and belief that we will ever sail a boat made with our own hands. It is better to assume, that we will be building the boat on our own. A 6.5m yacht can be built by oneself. The bigger boats are a bit “inconvenient” – the dimensions and weight of the separate elements make processing and fitting very hard.
If we know the answer to these question the only thing left is the architecture of the yacht
